Aleksandr Porfiryevich Borodin (1833-1887) [offsite link]
Borodin studies medicine and chemistry at the medico-Surgical academy in St. Petersburg. Later he was appointed to the chair of Chemistry. He wrote his first flute concerto when he was only 13. His first major work was Symphony in E-flat in 1867.

Alexander Alyabiev (1787-1851) [offsite link]
Alyabiev authored more than 200 romances, 7 operas, 20 musical comedies, and many choral, symphonic, chamber and piano works.

Mikhail Glinka (1804-1857) [offsite link]
Glinka was the founder of the Russian national school of music, which was subsequently carried on by such composers as Aleksandr Borodin, Modest Mussorgsky, and Nikolay Rimsky- Korsakov.
