Living in the larger-than-life, spectacular state of Alaska for over 20 years has given me a pretty good perspective on my adopted state. I arrived here in 1997, full of awe and wonder and I haven’t lost that feeling yet.
I live on 15 acres of land in south-central Alaska, about an hour outside of Anchorage, with my husband and three dogs. I enjoy teaching K9 Nose Work at a local dog training facility. When I’m not doing that, I write, travel, spin my own yarn and knit.
Over the years, my love of nature and wildlife have taken me to places like Denali, Kenai Fjords National Park and Seward’s awesome Sea Life Center. Up close and personal, within reason, is my favorite way to interact with animals, but I must admit it’s not always practical. I try to limit moose and bear encounters, for example, to a safe viewing distance. I’ve taken advantage of the Alaska Railroad and Alaska Marine Highway systems to get to some of the more out of the way destinations in the state.
Several years ago, I decided a few trips a year just weren’t cutting it anymore and bought a 27’ Winnebago. I now hit the road as often as I can from spring through fall, usually accompanied by my adventurous pair of black & tan Dachshunds, Baxter & Rhonda. What is more fun than a road trip in Alaska?
I can hardly wait to tell you about the people I’ve met and places I’ve been. Alaska in winter is a cold and often snowy wonderland, where I’m perfectly happy snuggled up in front of the woodstove. But come April, everything comes to life and it truly does become the land of the midnight sun.
