As the editor of the Desktop Publishing / Ebooks site I am sharing the knowledge gained from years of experience as a professional desktop publisher and graphic designer.

The articles you find here cover the basic components of putting together a publication including, though certainly not limited to, written content, layout and design, and adding the finishing touches. Focus is also given to creating the right look and feel to your project. You will also find articles covering preparing documents to be published the conventional way and look at the world of self publishing the electronic way.

Different types of software that can be used for layout and graphic design are explored.

PageMaker, a professional layout software, is where you bring together all the elements for your publication -- text, pictures and graphics -- whether a single page flyer or a more complex publication.

CorelDraw, a vector based graphic program, is used to create and manipulate text, clip art and graphic designs to make something unique and distinctive to the publication you are producing.

Photoshop is another graphics program that you can have lots of fun being creative with fonts, illustrations and photographs. I started using Photoshop because some of my clients were sending me Photoshop files that they wanted changes made to -- in other words, I was forced into it! And glad I was because I love using Photoshop now!

Enhanced word processing programs offer style sheets and templates for all kinds of documents that can be altered to give it your own look and feel. There are other programs that can be used to create additional elements for your publication, for instance Excel to create charts and graphs. Then there are digital cameras and scanners and oh the possibilities are endless!
