2020 IOLI Lace Heritage Contest

2020 IOLI Lace Heritage Contest
This week I am sharing announcement from the International Organization of Lacemakers 2020. I have been a member since 1995. Their conventions are annual and full of lots of interesting lace classes.

2020 I.O.L.I. Lace Contest - Honoring Our Heritage

The 2020 Convention theme is Phoenix Rising and the host group will be honoring their lace makers who are in their 80¡¦s, 90¡¦s, and 100¡¦s. The 2020 contest will honor the people who taught and inspired us to create with thread. Entry deadline is June 15, 2020.

For the Doris Southard Award and the Original Design category, choose design and execute lace that honors your heritage.

For the Technical Proficiency Award, choose the person or people you want to honor and then choose an appropriate lace pattern to ¡§frame¡¨ the honoree.

Here are some examples. In 1985 the lace makers at Turku, Finland inspired me to learn to make bobbin lace. I could select a picture from the visit to Turku and a Finnish bobbin lace pattern. To honor my maternal grandmother who taught me to sew and crochet a chain, I could use a picture of her with her quilting friends since I don¡¦t have a picture of her with the tablecloths she crocheted. I would have to learn to crochet edgings for the frame. We remember Grandma¡¦s Aunt Oddie leaning over our shoulders saying ¡§If you aren¡¦t satisfied with your work, take it out and try again.¡¨ She was a seamstress and made tatted lace to embellish our pillowcases. Aunt Oddie¡¦s name, birth, and death dates and locations could take the place of a picture. A collage or sampler of photos is permissible.

The entry can be 2-D or 3DS. The maximum size of rigid entries such as pictures, including the frame and matting and/or props, is 22 inches by 22 inches by 22 inches. For a 3-D entry, the entrant should supply the necessary props to display the entry properly. If the entry is flexible, like a scarf, cape, afghan, table runner or similar item, it will be folded for display in an area no larger than 30 inches by 30 inches. Include a picture with your flexible entry to show how you would like it folded for display.

You have the choice of using the online entry form or a downloadable entry form that follows the contest rules or contact the 2020 contest chair, Sally Olsen.
