About the BellaOnline Beer and Brewing Editor
Carolyn Smagalski
Freelance beer journalist Carolyn Smagalski has been a key figure in advancing passion for craft beer among women in America. Armed with her Beer Fox moniker, she has served as Beer & Brewing writer/editor at BellaOnline, the Voice of Women, since 2005. The Brewers Association awarded her the Beer Journalism Award in Electronic Media in 2006.
In collaboration with Ian Buxton and twelve international drinks-writers, she contributed the lead piece to "Beer Hunter Whisky Chaser," a book of essays published by Neil Wilson Pub Ltd,© 2009. Proceeds totaling more than $21,000 were initially contributed to the Parkinson Society of the UK on behalf of the contributing authors. An online edition is currently available and continues to support the Parkinson Society on an ongoing basis. In 2011, her academic piece, Michael Jackson: Father of the craft brewing renaissance in America, was published by the Brewing History Society Journal (UK) in a special edition which chronicled the lifetime achievements of British drinks-author Michael Jackson (1942-2007).
She writes an international beer blog for Beer Connoisseur Online and is Features and UK Beer News Correspondent for Beer Connoisseur Magazine. She is also published in Caviar Affair, Philadelphia Weekly, Philly Beer Scene, Ale Street News, Whisky France, Zymurgy, Celebrator, Living Without, Maximum Yield, foxnews.com, the Brewing History Society Journal (UK), and several online magazines.
She is co-founder of the Philly Beer Geek Competition, is a Certified Beer Server in the Cicerone Certification Program, and is Beer and Brewing Advisor for the International Gluten Free Beer Festival. As a Certified Beer Judge through the Beer Judge Certification Program, she has served as an International Beer Judge at the Great American Beer Festival since 2007, at the 2007 Great Alaska Beer & Barley Wine Festival in Anchorage, Alaska, the 2009 Mondial de la Biere in Montreal, and at the World Beer Cup since 2008. On the local front, she has judged at the Atlantic City Brewfest, the Philadelphia Inquirer Brew-vitational, the National IPA Challenge for Mid-Atlantic Brewing News, and many regional Homebrew Competitions.
Since 2007, she has served as emcee of the Beer & Food Pavilion at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver Colorado. She was a speaker at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology in Philadelphia in 2007 and at the Whisky Festival of Northern Netherlands in Groningen in 2008. She has presented beer & food shows at the Sullivan Arena, the Snowgoose Brewpub Theater, the William A. Egan Civic & Convention Center in Anchorage Alaska, and at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colorado.
Smagalski is president of CQ Web Wide LLC and webmaster/producer of www.cqwebwide.com. Her profile has appeared in Marquis´ Who´s Who in America since 2005, Marquis´ Who´s Who of American Women since 2006, Marquis´ Who´s Who in Finance and Business since 2007, and Marquis´ Who´s Who in the World since 2008. She is an IFR rated pilot with complex aircraft rating. With a long-time passion for the magazine industry, Carolyn also serves publishers and catalogers through the Sales Division of nationally-acclaimed Quad/Graphics, with headquarters in Sussex, Wisconsin.
Her multi-generational family values fuel joy in her life, and include her two high-spirited sons, a grandson and a granddaughter, and many other "honorary members of the family" to whom her doors are always open.
