Factors Related to Childhood Obesity in Mexico
Mexico is said to have the highest rate of childhood obesity in the world. There are many factors that contribute to the problem that are universal in nature. However, some of these causes may be considered to be culturally and uniquely Mexican in origin and in their perpetuation.

Twice a year, in the spring and in late fall/early winter, throughout much of Mexico, a popular, delicious, healthy, and nutritious snack is available, fresh garbanzo beans. While most of the people in my town of Churintzio, Michoacan consume them raw, they are also eaten steamed or dry roasted.

As of 2011, Mexico is the "globesity" leader in the percentage of its citizens who are either overweight or obese. This is largely the result of the country adapting both Westernized eating/drinking habits and an accompanying sedentary lifestyle.

Where I live in Mexico, the majority of the local residents have extreme apprehension, sometimes bordering on the phobic, in regards to what I refer to as "the fearsome trio"- bats, snakes, and scorpions. Of the three, it is the scorpion that poses the most prevalent threat to humans and pets.
