Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Facing Dog Pose)
Downward Facing Dog Pose, called Adho Mukha Svanasana in Sanskrit, is one of the most basic yoga poses. Here are some cues for getting into the pose, as well as tips on how to use a variation at work.
Agnistambhasana with Garudasana Arms
Fire Log, or Double Lotus Pose stretches the lower body, while Garudasana Arms do the same for the shoulders and neck.
Ardha Chandrasana
Also called Half-Moon Pose, this is a beautiful balance.
Baddha Konasana
This is one of my favorites -- in so many ways, it cures what ails you!
Balasana
Child's Pose is not necessarily simple or easy. Give it another look.
Cobra, Sphinx, and Seal Poses
These asana will help to open your chest and throat and access Vishuddhi chakra or several meridian lines in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Cobra is an essential part of Sun Salutations, while Sphinx and Seal are integral Yin poses.
Exploring Apasana
This simple pose contains quite a few movements. Check it out and see!
Gomukhasana
A difficult pose for many people, Gomukhasana is doable if broken down into steps.
Half Pigeon Pose (Ardha Kapotanasana)
Ardha Kapotanasana, as the pose is called in Sanskrit, is one of the strongest stretches for your gluteal muscles, but the supine variation is best for beginners.
Janu Sirsasana
This pose is deceptively simple. Be careful and pay attention to your form so that you don’t injure yourself.
Natarajasana
Enjoy the dance of life with this fearless pose!
Padmasana and Its Friends
Lotus can be wonderful for a meditation pose, but it’s contraindicated for many people. You’ll need to experiment to find your perfect version - which may not be what you think it is!
Parighasana, or Gate Pose
This is a side stretch done while standing on the knees.
Savasana
Ever wonder why all yoga classes end with this pose?
Setu Bandha Sarvangasana
Whether you use the mouthful Sanskrit name – or prefer to simply call it “Bridge” – this pose provides amazing benefits to both your mind and body.
Tadasana, or Mountain Pose
When one begins yoga, one learns that standing is more complex than it seems. Tadasana, or Mountain Pose, is an exercise in posture, meditation, and focus.
Tips for Balance Poses
Some people refuse to use props at all. Here's my take on why that's a limiting position (so to speak...)
Trikonasana, or Triangle Pose
As one of the basic poses, Trikonasana is an important posture to master. Here is a primer on the posture.
Uttanasana and Ardha Uttanasana

Utthita Parsvakonasana
Extended Side Angle Pose is one of the basic open hip postures.
Vasisthasana, or Side Plank
Side Plank is one of the more challenging balances, but it is well worth the time it takes to master the asana.
Viparita Karani
A restful and restorative pose, Viparita Karani allows us to see the world from a different perspective.
Virabhadrasana II
Virabhadrasana II is one of the key standing poses. It's important to use it for more than just a way into and out of other open hip poses.
Virabhadrasana III
This is not a beginner pose, but modifications and props can help one access the various movements.
