BellaOnline Press Release
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
BellaOnline.com Donates 6.2 Million Ads to Charity in September 2009
The Second Largest Women's Website Proves Content Sites Can Coexist With Philanthropic Ideals
In an environment where many websites are loading their pages with pop-up ads and fighting over Google rankings, BellaOnline.com forges a diametrically different path.
The site donated more than six million ads to its favorite charities in September alone. Companies such as Heifer.org, Kiva.org, the ASPCA and the Red Cross have benefited from BellaOnline's generosity.
This giving spirit is not limited to September. BellaOnline has been running charity ad campaigns since its inception.
Lisa Shea, owner of BellaOnline, explains that helping others is at the heart of BellaOnline. "Our website actively trains over three hundred writers to create useful content for the web and grow a community. All of our editors at BellaOnline are volunteers. It is critical to us that the results of our communal efforts go towards helping others less fortunate than ourselves."
Each of BellaOnline's chosen charities reflects this same passion for lending assistance to those in need. For example, Kiva.org is a microfinance company. Microfinance is a concept brought to worldwide attention by Muhammad Yunus, who won the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts.
Kiva invites people to donate as little as $25, so everyone has the opportunity to make a difference. The lending individual can choose exactly who they want to lend the money to, selecting based on the recipient's profile and plans. Together, groups of lenders can help those struggling for financial independence to succeed. Those receiving microloans include farmers and owners of small businesses. The loans help them to support themselves and their families, and help them to help others as well.
"I adore Kiva," explains Shea. "The idea that we are helping people help themselves appeals to me greatly." BellaOnline's Kiva profile can be found online at http://www.kiva.org/lender/bellaonlinecom3964
Another charity which BellaOnline actively promotes is Heifer.org. Heifer International helps small rural communities flourish. One way in which Heifer assists is to donate animals which are known to do well in the village's environment. For example, families in Peru might be given llamas and receive training on how to care for them. Those families are then required to pass along llama offspring to their neighbors. The gift benefits the family and strengthens the community, bringing sustained independence.
"Heifer is simply amazing," says Shea. "It may seem like such a small thing - a rabbit, a chicken. But to an impoverished family, this is suddenly the way they are provided with food, with materials to make clothing, with an avenue to earn income and change their lives. All of this from one small gift."
"BellaOnline provides our editors with the tools to succeed," continues Shea. "We are growing every day. We want our website to then 'pass on' that gift, to allow our success to bring charities to the attention of millions of BellaOnline readers. Over one billion people live without access to safe drinking water and 1.2 billion people are undernourished. It is easy to be overwhelmed by such large numbers. However, if each of us takes steps to help, together we can turn the tide. As Mahatma Gandhi said, 'You must be the change you want to see in the world.' I agree with this wholeheartedly. We must each take that step - whatever we can do in our circumstances - to help others."
As the recession loosens its grip, BellaOnline looks forward to helping even more visitors learn about these amazing charities. "My aim is to donate 75 million ads to our charities by the end of the year," says Shea. "We're well on track to reach that goal. With the help of these charities, we can all be that change. We just need to each take that first step."
