Heifer.org -
Charity Organizations that BellaOnline Supports
Heifer.org was one of the first charity programs I really fell in love with. Begun back in 1944, the company was created by a farmer who was literally pouring out cups of milk for children during the Spanish Civil War. He realized pretty quickly that continuing to "bring in milk" was not the answer - if he simply gave the families COWS then they would have all the milk they needed! Plus, with a bull or two, they could create their own cows, too!
That is the entire theory behind heifer. They go into a poor landscape - let's say Peru for example. They look at what kind of livestock would flourish in that area. So let's assume llamas do well in Peru. They then arrange with specific families to get the training on raising llamas and give them a pair. That family then raises llamas with the agreement that they will give some away to neighboring villages. Those donations are then made with the understanding that the receiving family will also "share the wealth". In this way a single gift can end up helping an entire region!
It is not just about milk. The animals provide wool so that people can make clothes and stay warm. They provide pack animal uses, carrying burdens and pulling plows. The animals literally become the most important part of the family.
I love Heifer.org. It is truly about helping people help themselves. They are now able to plow their fields, stay healthy and fed, help others in their village, have fertilizer for their crops, and much more. Since animals can "make more animals" (unlike tractors!) this is a gift that can help a village for decades.
Heifer also provides "renewable" gifts such as honeybees and trees, for those who are vegetarian or vegan!
Highly recommended!
