Many studies have shown that how a person relates to animals can directly equate to how they relate to other people. That is, a child who grows up torturing and damaging cats is very likely to then continue this same behavior on their own kids and spouse as an adult.
Similarly, many studies show that a person who spends time caring for an animal - a dog, a cat, even a fish - becomes more healthy, more calm, more able to take care of their own needs and the needs of others. Animals provide a very real benefit to humans.
This is why the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals - or ASPCA - exists. This was one of the first organizations in the world dedicated to providing safe, humane treatment of animals. Dogs should not be whipped. Cats should not be mangled. Animals should be treated fairly, with love and compassion.
There are ASPCA related organizations all around the world, and all have the same mission. They help rescue dogs who have been injured in dogfighting. They help rescue cats who are being tortured. The ASPCA has the top quality rating from CharityNavigator and spends as much of its income as it can on helping protect animals.
