As a Christian, I use the word Lord a lot, the Lord God, Lord of life, Lord of lords, etc. I began to wonder if I was taking the title as seriously as I should, so I started with the dictionary.

Lord:

one having power and authority over others

a ruler by hereditary right or preeminence to whom service and obedience are due

The book of Genesis, chapter 2, verses 4 - 22 tell me that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, the animals, birds, fish, and plant life. And the Lord God created man and woman.

It seems clear that the Lord God has the right to power and authority over all of us.
My prayer has often been "I accept Your Lordship over my life. I belong to You."
I ask Jesus to be Lord of my life. When I pray, I tell Him that I want Him to guide me and to arrange my life in the way it should go. I want my life to glorify Him. I tell Him that I accept His Lordship in my life, but I wonder if I'm taking full advantage of His Lordship. Am I living as though He is Lord?

In medieval times the lord of the land was responsible for the care of his subjects. He governed, providing the rules and regulations making it possible for his subjects to live together peacefully. He provided work and a source of food, and He also provided protection. He surrounded His people with a wall of protection, sometimes even by a stone wall surrounding the village. The wall kept out wild animals and bandits that sought to harm the villagers.

While those living inside the wall were protected, there were also people living outside the wall. They may have respected the lord of the land and might even have abided by his rules but they did not receive the full benefit of his provision and protection.

I may be one of those people who are living outside the wall. I feel like the one who accepts the Lord of the manor as the governing authority; follows the rules and gives the Lord the respect that is due Him. However, I am still worrying about putting food on the table. I am still worrying about an income. By living outside of the wall, I feel unprotected.

Psalm 34:7 "The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear Him, and He delivers them."
Psalm 55:22 "Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous fall."

Matthew 6:25-34 stresses that we are not to worry about what we will eat or what we will wear. The Lord provides for the birds of the air and we are much more important than they are. We are to seek His kingdom and His righteousness and leave the rest to Him.

I think that it is time I moved inside the wall and put my full trust in my Lord. My prayer will now include the words, "Lord, help me stay inside the wall of Your provision and protection."
