Valerie Joan Connors makes Meredith journey is so compelling. Why did Anastasia keep so many secrets? What happened in California? And what will Meredith find on her way to scatter Anastasia’s ashes? What I really loved about reading this story is the emotion that is conveyed throughout. When Meredith feels shocked, you feel her shock. When Meredith feels heartbroken, you feel heartbroken. Meredith traces her mother's journey from Wisconsin to California through the journals that Anastasia's lawyer brings to her. It was a great idea to have Anastasia's journals written into the storyline. We get to see both sides of this story and the reasons Anastasia did what she did. I wanted to be mad at Anastasia but I couldn't. As her journey want on, I completely understood how she fell in love with Meredith dad.
This is a great storyline. I don't want to give too much of the story away because as each secret is revealed then resolved you will feel the emotions that the each character is feeling. Each secret seems to be bigger than the next the further Meredith goes. Every time someone passed away, even one character who was a hindrance for Meredith to be happy, it was still a shock and you mourn for that character.
I really enjoyed the writing style of Connors and can't wait to get my hands on another one of her books. A Shadow of a Smile is highly recommended. Just make sure you have a nice block of time set aside to read this because it is so hard to put it down!
