Dying to Tell Review
Two years ago, Homicide Detective Oliver “Tuck” Tucker was investigating noises he heard in his home late one night. He ended up with a bullet in his heart. Since that time, Tuck realized that he can still solve crimes, but from the beyond.
Very few people have the ability to communicate with him: his wife, his former detective partner, and his long-dead grandfather, a Bronze Star recipient stuck in the 1940’s. His clients are dead or know someone who is, although they usually are not able to hear him but sometimes can feel a presence they don’t understand.
In this case, his wife Angel gets caught up in a bank robbery gone wrong. Tuck finds the chairman of the bank was shot to death in the bank’s vault counting room. He connects up with his former partner Bear Braddock and Cal, a cop who is aware of Tuck and knows Bear talks to him, in order to solve the case.
As they search for the killer, a growing number of possible suspects keep the investigators busy, as does the body count that continues to climb.
Dying to Tell, (a Gumshoe Ghost Mystery), by award-winning novelist TJ O’Connor, is the third in the series following Dying to Know and Dying for the Past. O’Connor has created a unique murder mystery series that will keep readers turning the pages to see what happens next. And, there are plenty of twists and turns to keep those who try to solve the case for themselves busy.
I like that Tuck can talk to a certain few as the ability enhances the fun of trying to solve the mystery. Readers get to peek into the conversations and evidence Tuck and those who can converse with him reveal as they work the case.
The author has created well-rounded characters and the plot over-the-top enough to bring a smile to readers in the midst of the investigation. At first it is difficult to tell who is good and who is not. Following the clues and the surprise reveals will easily draw some readers to see if they can solve the mystery before the final unexpected scenes.
