The Necessary Murder of Nonie Blake Review
After twenty years in a mental institution for trying to kill her sister, Winona “Nonie” Blake returns to Jarrett Creek. A few days after she arrived home she was found drowned in the pond behind the family home. Years ago when she was fourteen she tried to hang her younger sister, eight-year-old Charlotte, but their brother Billy was able to stop her in time.
During the initial investigation into her death, Samuel Craddock, police chief of Jarred Creek, established it looked like she was murdered, hit in the head. Because of their history, Chief Craddock focused on the family and who would most want Nonie dead, digging deep into the past in order to try to solve the present mystery.
The more Sheriff Craddock searched for the culprit and found out the many secrets the family carried, the more the family began to draw within themselves, urging the Sheriff to leave them alone. In the meantime he realized there was a lot more to the story than he realized, and the family was sharing.
The Necessary Murder of Nonie Blake, A Samuel Craddock Mystery by Terry Shames is the fifth in the award winning series based in small-town Texas. The fictional town of Jarrett Creek comes alive with unique, realistic characters, especially the older Chief Craddock who retires once and comes back to serve the people when the town goes bankrupt.
A strong plot and interesting story line will keep pages turning as the Chief digs far deeper than he would ever have realized. Readers who like to solve mysteries will have a difficult time due to layers of well-placed clues that can easily lead in more than one direction.
This was a fun story that brings readers a number of past characters as well as a slew of new people we get to meet. That the author takes her time to let us get to know them helps the story come to live and will have readers looking forward to the next installment.
