Patrick Hill was walking the grounds of a former hospital for the insane when his dog, Brian, discovered a body. Detective Jill Brennan accompanied her boss Detective Inspector Nick Rimis to the site where they began their initial investigation into the cause of death.
The victim was Senior Constable Robert (Robbie) Calloway. When Jill realized who it was, she remembered his call to her two days before, and the fact that she had accidently deleted his message. It appeared he had jumped from the top of the tower, but Jill knew he was afraid of heights.
Because the victim was close friend of Jill’s, her boss had her work another case to take her mind off his death. She was to work under the head of the task force on the Asian gangs in the area.
Not one to sit back and wait for others to find out what happened to Robbie, Jill quietly kept working his case including talking to his sister, Fin, despite increased pressure from the police commissioner who wanted the investigation dropped. When another death appeared to be related to the case, Rimis brought in Jill to help.
Asylum, by Gina Amos, is the third book in the Detective Jill Brennan Series following Secrets and Lies, and Killing Sunday. This is a solid series that keeps getting better with each edition.
Asylum is a page-turner that will keep readers glued to the story. Her characters are well-developed and true to life, especially the emotions associated with the each person who has a stake in finding the truth as to what happened to the victim.
Unexpected twists and turns keep us off-guard, but part of the fun is guessing who the bad guys or gals are. The author also includes real life emotional scenes as characters interact with one another in current relationships or new people enter into their lives.
