The Dogs of Littlefield Review
Littlefield, Massachusetts earned a distinguished title as one of the Twenty Best Places to Live in America due to inhabitants that included many psychologists and college professors. Unfortunately, the town wasn’t as pristine as it seemed.
A brewing controversy regarding whether dogs should be allowed in the park without a leash or required to wear a leash to combat the increasing number of dogs who were found dead was increasing.
A deep division between the two groups, including walkers, bikers, and runners versus those who allowed their dogs to use the park as a dumping ground, separated friends and family members.
The situation got even more serious when town pet dogs were killed, believed by coyotes, but later it was found they were poisoned instead. Now some people were afraid for their own lives.
One family found themselves in a crisis when the mother and father disagreed to the point that the mother contemplated an affair with a neighbor who was on her side. When her daughter fell into an icy pond trying to save a puppy that was not on a leash, those involved realized they needed to focus on their priorities.
The Dogs of Littlefield by Suzanne Berne was a much deeper story than I first expected. I thought the novel was the kind of pet mystery where we find talking pets and a light-hearted story, but it was so much more. The novel is a serious cozy mystery that takes a look at what can happen when a town is rocked by controversy, families are split apart, and friends are on opposite sides of line few want to cross.
Not all is serious, however. There are plenty of times when readers will likely laugh out loud at the antics of the pets as well as people.
Detailed description and obvious hours of research brings a day-to-day reality to the story. Any of us could look at the town’s inhabitants and see a part of us in them and wonder how we would react if a similar situation occurred in our town. The author gives us plenty to think about in this superb book.
