Treasure's Skirtwork for Fusion Belly Dance
Dancers, this DVD is a must for your toolbox. Fusion, especially when using the skirt as a prop, is popular amongst belly dancers. Treasure's Skirtwork for Belly Dancers is a useful instruction DVD to get you in the right direction.
I wish I had this DVD long ago. When I started with Flamenco classes, I felt I needed more instruction on the use of my skirt as a prop. I could only watch carefully as my instructor rapidly gave instruction with skirt, while I tried my best to follow. Had this DVD been around, I would have understood more about hand placement and such.
In addition, I knew eventually that whatever I learned in Flamenco, in regards to the skirtwork, I wanted to implement in my belly dance choreography in the future.
This DVD is a blessing and I highly recommend dancers purchase. Performer Treasure, takes you from the beginning. First she discusses the skirt and right choices of fabric when choosing the skirt. It is always important, as Treasure points out in her DVD, that the skirt is a prop. The skirt has to move with you. Second, she discusses accessories to use with the skirt, such as belts. Third, is the instruction, and finally a section called "just for kicks".
Dancing with the skirt is a workout for your arms. Treasure recommends, "You are working with a large amount of fabric, so even a simple practice skirt is like carrying light weights. Repetition isn’t a lot of fun, but it does build up your muscles and your stamina. It also develops muscle memory so you can do the steps without thinking, something that helps with stage presence".
The instruction is both a foot and hand visual. Treasure will first show you what the movement is without the skirt and then with the skirt. She makes wonderful suggestions as to which belly dance movements to implement while doing skirtwork.
Movements are either wings (skirt open at the side) or thigh (skirt held in front of the body). Each has many suggestions and the names of each movement are easy to remember. This makes it easy for the dancer to focus on the move, instead of worrying over the Spanish or foreign name associated with the move.
The music on this DVD is mostly Spanish inspired. Of course Treasure leaves the choice of music up to the dancer. However, she says, "It is much easier to use music that has at least some sharp accents.There are no hard and fast rules, but it’s very effective to have the final flourish of each movement arrive on the beat, or on an accent in the musical phrase".
