A program called Script Talk provided by the organization called envisions America allows a vision impaired/blind person to read the information printed on a pill bottle using a bar code reader device.

Script talk is a free program that is set up by envisions America through cooperation with your pharmacy.

The process for signing up for the program is easy and fast. Simply visit the Envision America Website and fill out the application on the website. In a few days, an Envision America Representative will call you confirming your establishment into the program.

A script Talk device is mailed to your home, In the meantime; envision America is working with your pharmacist to place a chip into the lid of your medicine bottles that contains a complete file about your medication. You simply glide the Script talk device across the bar code on the pill bottle and listen to the information about your medication.

The information in the script Talk includes items such as; name of medicine, prescription number, pharmacy information, medication regiment, dosage of medicine and side effects of the medicine. In other words; all of the information that is included in a brochure given to the customer at the pharmacy pick up window.

A disadvantage of the Script talk is obtaining the cooperation of certain pharmacies that do not support the program. Unfortunately, some very large pharmaceutical companies do not support Script talk. Therefore, unless the pharmacy decides Script talk is worth the effort for the company to provide to customers the program is inaccessible to vision impaired/blind individuals.

I encourage all vision impaired individuals who deal with medication management issues to request from his/her pharmacy the support of the Script Talk program. The only way to make the program easier to obtain is if everyone who needs the program signs up and uses the system.

Script Talk is free to the vision impaired person and is easy to use. The program can be implemented at a pharmacy without much effort.
